Preface: Weird Tokyo
“Weird” is an interesting term because it is full of ethnocentric concept. There is no objective definition of this vocabulary. When individuals portray another person “weird,” this implies that the person is not living up their expectation. However, is this person weird or normal? It depends on his or her cultural background. It is obvious that when people saying “Weird Tokyo,” the statement seems to be given by outsiders. Thus, why Tokyo is weird?
Tokyo is weird because she lets our dreams come true! Let’s talk about theme restaurants and cafes. If you have read some travel magazines, you should hear about Kawaii Monster Café, Robot Restaurants, Ninja Restaurants, and animals’ cafes. Some of the characters from the café are fictitiously created. Since people live in this planet, they use their imagination to observe their living environments. However, because of their ego and social restriction, they have to suppress their dreams and desire in order to fit into the society. Tokyo is weird because she links the simulated world and real world together. She makes our dreams tangible.
The characters from animation are not real, but cosplay makes those characters alive. Maybe the real lesson from the “weird Tokyo” is that living in this planet can have limitless potential. People should never lose their dreams and visions. If they never give up their dreams and imagination, there is nothing impossible. Now, please join Enable Japan entering to the weird city, Tokyo, and retain our lost dreams.
